ABOUT COUNSELLING
Most people feel that life is not all they would like it to be – but some experience more distress, worry or fear than others. These inner hurts can come out in a number of ways:
- Panic attacks
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Difficulties in relationships
- Bodily aches and pains for which there seems to be no physical cause
- Feeling things are unreal
- Unexpected changes of mood
- Fears of various kinds …and so on
The reasons for these unpleasant feelings are just as wide ranging, but mostly they are rooted in relationship difficulties. This sometimes occurs in the early years of life when parents were not able to give the secure love that a child needs. It may be due to difficult experiences later on in adolescence perhaps or, in adult life. Counselling aims to help these kinds of problem.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
If after the initial assessment counselling is deemed appropriate by both the client and counsellor then regular appointments are set up. This is usually a 50min session per week. In these sessions where the person is valued as an individual the distressing parts of their life can be gradually explored in a safe setting. As a result of this, changes begin to occur – hurts begin to ease and the person finds new ways of dealing with life.
This kind of approach is not magic. It requires both the client and the therapist to stick at it. The commitment will last for as long as you and your therapist feel that you need it.
